ResQNet, the patent holding doyens of automated user interface modernization, as noted with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office case study in July 2002, is back in the fray after somewhat of a hiatus. In mid-October, to coincide with the AS/400 COMMON show, they announced that MedUSA and Innovative Computer Consultants have licensed ResQNet’s highly proven technology to modernize the user interfaces of their AS/400 applications.

MedUSA is using ResQNet technology to update the appearance of its AS/400-based Med Prime medical billing and practice management software. The company previously had made minor programming-based modifications to upgrade its old green screens but recently began encountering pressure from medical office staff to deliver a true contemporary Windows-style, point-and-click GUI.

On the other hand, Innovative Computer Consultants is using ResQNet to modernize its AS/400-based eRegister point-of-sale software targeted at retail specialty stores. The new customized GUI will work better in the sophisticated retail environments that tend to select eRegister - especially with the new ability to display PDF and JPEG images of products in jewelry store or antique store settings.

Todres [Mr. ResQNet] Yampel, President and COO of ResQNet, had this to say about this success: "It feels good to be proven right in the market place. Our products offer the proper mix of 'on-the-fly' default GUI features with functionality to provide very extensive customization. This gives our customers the option to roll out the products quickly while concentrating on the few screens that require special attention."

Both application vendors selected ResQNet over competitive products because of the fast plug-and-play conversion provided by ResQNet's proprietary pattern detection and conversion technology. Both companies expect their screen modernization initiatives to generate increased sales by meeting end user demands for a familiar Windows-like environment. Ironically this is exactly the market that IBM is now belatedly trying to address with HATS. It would be interesting to see how HATS compares to ResQNet’s equivalent – i.e. ResQPortal.

"We've made huge investments in software development, but our interface still looks obsolete because it's character-based and not user-friendly," said Bob Jordan Sr., president of Innovative Computer. "With ResQNet, we will be able to bring our screens into the GUI era without making any modifications to our legacy software."
