What is AlertU?

ResQNet has developed AlertU, a Java servlet that can be used by institutions to assist in identifying persons and entities that are included in OFAC's list of restricted entities. It works in conjunction with a database application of the users' choosing. AlertU requires the use of a Web server and an application server (e.g., IBM HTTP Server and IBM WebSphere).

OFAC stands for Office of Foreign Assets Control, a government organization that is part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. OFAC administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions against targeted foreign countries, terrorism sponsoring organizations and international narcotics traffickers. OFAC maintains listings of these restricted entities. This information is available to the public as database files.

AlertU can take and incorporate corporate databases of individuals and entities that they feel should be added to their "Watch List".

AlertU consists of three major parts: the Administrator, the Query servlet, and the Log Viewer. Each performs a specific task.

AlertU Administrator

The Administrator's basic function consists of configuring the AlertU database. Files are downloaded from OFAC's Web site and imported into the database.

All information stored in the database is encrypted to prevent unauthorized modifications.

AlertU Servlet

The AlertU Servlet is located on the application server. Whether accessed through ResQNet, ResQPortal, or as a stand-alone application, it works in the same fashion. Keywords are entered and search parameters are passed to the servlet, which returns a list of records that correspond to the user's query. Multiple keyword searches can be run as either AND or OR searches.

These searches are accomplished though the use of ODBC or JDBC drivers. When a query is made, the servlet connects to the database through the ODBC or JDBC drivers and retrieves the necessary information.

AlertU Log Viewer

The AlertU Log Viewer is available only to System Administrators as an auditing tool. Every time the Query servlet is run, the Log Viewer records all search results and user actions. This allows the system administrator to see and audit a variety of information on servlet use such as when a query was made, query keyword(s), and users. Records can be filtered by any of these criteria. For example, users can request all information on AlertU Query access by a specific user, or searches using a particular keyword.

AlertU Log Viewer

The AlertU Log Viewer allows the administrator to monitor the activity of the query servlet. Every time the servlet is run, the Log Viewer records all user actions and query results. Information regarding servlet use is then available to the administrator for review.

Search parameters can be defined to narrow the results displayed in the log viewer. When no parameters are set, the results will display all search activity from the beginning of the quarter until the current date.

All information stored in the database is encrypted to prevent unauthorized modifications.

AlertU and ResQPortal

Host applications using ResQPortal can be customized to interact with the AlertU servlet. Information can be passed to the database and query results can be returned to the host session. ResQPortal uses Global Variables to send data to the servlet and a web link to display the results.

When the user clicks on the web-link a new browser window will open, displaying the results of your search. Select an item from the list and click Details for more information. Press Accept or Reject to complete the query.

AlertU and ResQNet

Host applications using ResQNet can be customized to interact with the AlertU servlet. Information can be passed to the database and query results can be returned to the host session. ResQNet uses a custom applet to send data to the servlet. The applet is configured using Get-to-the-Point on screen entry and is triggered by a standard function key.

Once the button is pressed, an applet window will appear, displaying the results of your search. Select an item from the list and click Details for more information. Press Accept or Reject to complete the query.

AlertU Standalone

The AlertU servlet can be used as a standalone application. It does not require a host session in order to run.

Search parameters are passed to the servlet via a standard HTML form or through an HTTP POST/GET. The results are displayed in the browser window. Select an item from the list and click Details for more information. Press Accept or Reject to complete the query.
